Biography Book Cover Design
Digital Illustration Class Project
Project Scope:
Create a book cover for a biography of any person well known enough to be written about.
Your illustration needs to have a likeness to your chosen person and give a sense of the content of the book.
Goal of the assignment is to achieve likeness and create a compelling cover entirely in Adobe Photoshop.
I chose to design a biography for the late female poet, Mary Oliver. In a nod to the themes of nature in her work as well as one of her most popular poems, “Wild Geese”, I chose to include imagery of a goose in a whimsical way.
I knew I wanted to frame the illustrated portrait with the wings so I worked at creating a dynamic image without covering the portrait entirely. I enjoyed working at creating a painterly texture entirely in Photoshop. The color palette was also chosen to feel serene and light as a nod to her poetry. I chose the bold color for the title to draw attention without feeling out of place.
